American Racers Stealth Drive!

Sunday, 05 February 2006 - SSS PR

After early leads by US import Brad Kuhn and local gun Adam Clarke, it was American Jerry Coons Jnr who stormed home in the 30-lap Speedcar Super Series “A” Main in the American Tires & Racing Services #7 Stealth machine ahead of Clarke and New Zealand’s Michael Pickens.

The magnificent set of pole shuffles saw Clarke take the Rod Bowen sponsored pole position beside Brad Kuhn (who moved up from 5th place in overall points), ahead of Pickens, Steven Graham, Tony Elliott, Coons Jnr, Mark Brown and Jason Gates in 8th.  TPCR served up an excellent track for the A Main with the 20 car field including some of the biggest names in Speedcar racing, including rear of field B-Main qualifiers American Davey Ray, Troy Jenkins, Nathan Smee and Rod Bright!

At the drop of the green, Kuhn grabbed the lead on the highline until Darren Jenkins came unstuck on turn four after young-gun West Aussie Todd Waddell tagged an infield marker and launched back onto the corner.

Back under a full restart, Adam Clarke this time took the lead from Kuhn whilst Kiwi charger Pickens shot to the low line for second into turn 3. Coons Jnr was attacking the 3rd placed Kuhn by the main straight with the American duo running wheel to wheel with Coons Jnr shooting ahead into the corner. The following lap Coons Jnr made a slingshot move under the Seamount team mates of Pickens and Clarke for the lead only three laps down!

Further down the pack the action was just as hot and heavy, when trouble struck for young West Australian Todd Waddell. Pushing the #6 through turns one and two, the rookie racer slammed into the cushion projecting him into a series of rolls and out of the A main. “(I) just made a mistake and hit the cushion” said the young-gun after exiting his car. “That’s racing”.

On the restart Coons Jnr lead away from Clarke, Pickens, Kuhn, Elliott, Graham, Mark Brown, West Aussie Neville Lance, American Danny Stratton, Gates and Troy Jenkins. Tony Elliott moved to the highline on fellow American Brad Kuhn before the duo clashed wheels, Elliott coming to a stop at the end of the main straight with a flat left rear tyre.

With 24 laps remaining, the race was again underway with Coons Jnr ahead of Pickens, Clarke, Kuhn, Brown and Graham. Kuhn raced to the low line challenging Clarke for 3rd through turns three and four, then taking Pickens on using the same manoeuvre through turns one and two. Not giving up, Pickens claimed the spot back on the back straight!

B-Main winner Davey Ray had progressed up to 4th passing Clarke and Brown before Nathan Smee came to a stop on the front straight after a wheel clash with Stevie Walsh. Restarted with 19 laps remaining, Coons Jnr led away from Pickens, Kuhn, Ray, Brown, Clarke, Jenkins, Stratton and Lance.

With racers attacking on multiple lanes, Ray screamed around the highline on the low running Kuhn for third before a crossed up Troy Jenkins was tagged by Paul Rinkin exiting turn two. With Rinkin headed to the pits on the yellow, Davey Ray in the NZ2 Aggressor/Hawk machine retired from the race whilst the N27 of Stevie Walsh came to a stop in the main straight; the young rookie’s driveline having exploded. After exiting the machine, Walsh was taken to hospital for treatment and later released with considerable bruising to his ankles.

Coons Jnr lead away with 17 laps remaining when the 5th running Adam Clarke came into form! Moving from the highline under the 4th running Brown, Clarke mastered the same move the following lap and passed Kuhn for third!

The front runners hit lapped traffic with seven laps remaining with Clarke rapidly closing on Pickens. Two laps later Clarke jumped under Pickens for second exiting turn two, as local Brown made a similar move on Kuhn from turn four for fourth.

Jerry Coons Jnr took the well earned win five laps later with a main straight away lead on second running Adam Clarke 9NZ, Michael Pickens 4NZ, Mark Brown 42N, Brad Kuhn 69N, Neville Lance 14WA, Nathan Smee 81N, Danny Stratton 18N, Jason Gates 70N, Darren Jenkins 21N, Troy Jenkins 2N, Tim Evans 57N and Dean Merrylees 2WA.
