Becoming the first double feature winner on the 2006/2007 Stealth Motorsports Speedcar Super Series, Sydney’s Mark Brown captured round five at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway on Saturday night. Storming ahead after snatching an early lead in the thirty lap A Main event, Brown was virtually unstoppable; crossing the line ahead of a rapidly closing Nathan Smee, West Australia’s Dene Mcallan and South Australian Ben Wiese.

Returning to Australia only days before the event after an impressive first run at the Chili Bowl in Oklahoma USA; Brown hit the track flying, marking a new track record in time trials before it too was beaten only moments later by Dene Mcallan who claimed The Speedway Shop QuickTime Award. The close competition between the fearsome due was setting the scene for the furious racing yet to come throughout the night; another bout of superb Speedcar action.

With Mcallan claiming pole for the main event after an impressive series of pole shuffles, it was Brown who took the immediate lead at the drop of the green flag from position two, followed by Mcallan, Jimmy Fleming of WA, Qld’s Grant Draney, Wiese, WA’s Neville Lance and Scott Glazebrook, before the yellows were pulled for a spun Todd Waddell with 29 laps left on the board.

On the restart as a number of talented hard chargers tried to move forward a remarkable battle began between the ninth running Troy Jenkins and the challenging Harley Bishop of Victoria in tenth; the duo sparing for the next four laps before the fourth running Grant Draney became unstuck through turns three and four ahead of the field with QLD’s Ken Stanaway, Smee, Lance and Matt Young all forced to a stop; with twenty five laps remaining.

Brown led away Mcallan, Fleming, Wiese, Glazebrook, Jenkins, Young and Bishop at the restart with Brown beginning to use a mid track line to Mcallan’s low running arrangement before Stanaway tagged the wall out of turn four and retired from the race.

Mcallan appeared to find new fire on the restart shooting low under the front running Brown through turns one and two; bringing the two machines side by side down the back straight and into turn three before Brown regained the advantage out of turn four. Not giving in lightly, Mcallan kept the same impressive force on for the next lap before Brown again moved ahead of the West Aussie young gun.

As the race progressed SSS newcomer Jimmy Fleming began to make advances on Mcallan; challenging for second before an accident in turns three and four brought on the yellows with nineteen laps remaining; SSS leader Lance involved sending him over but able to restart at the rear of the field.

By this stage Brown was beginning to use the high line of the Charlton circuit as was Nathan Smee; after being restarted off the rear earlier in the race, was now challenging Fleming for fourth! Fleming parried with Smee for the next few laps, the position switching a number of times before Smee shot down low to successfully stake his claim on fourth with sixteen laps remaining. Now intent on chasing down the third running Wiese, Smee again moved to the low line and in a swift move, captured third before the yellows were flown for QLD’s Darren Dillon who had come to a stop after spinning in turn two with 15 laps remaining.

Returning to the last recorded lap, Brown led away Mcallan, Wiese, Smee, Fleming, Glazebrook, Jenkins, Bishop, Young and QLD’s Kelvin Hamilton. Brown once again shot away from the pack as Smee set his sights on retaking third and Wiese began his campaign for second, darting under Mcallan out of turn two with fourteen laps left on the board.

Mcallan didn’t take the pass lying down; sliding back into second into the turns only to lose momentum to the higher running Wiese. The pair battled on for a number of laps before Scott Glazebrook tagged the front straight wall and flipped at the start finish line bringing on the reds with ten laps remaining.

Brown led from Wiese, Mcallan, Smee, Jenkins, Bishop, Young and Victoria’s Peter Ghent Jnr. Smee again used the highline to his advantage on the restart, screaming out wide to pass both Mcallan and Wiese down the back straight with hard running Wiese fighting back, relegating Smee to third out of turn four. Not to be held off, Smee kept up the pressure with Wiese relenting only laps later as Smee drove the highline through turns three and four to capture second place.

With only six laps till the chequers, Harley Bishop and Neville Lance made contact in the backstraight which saw Lance in the fence and rolling end to end before turn three. The West Australian legend was forced out of contention; his retirement potentially destroying is SSS Championship pointscore.

Brown shot ahead at the restart, gaining over four car lengths to the second running Smee, who also held over ¾ of a straightaway lead from the third and fourth Wiese and Mcallan. Yet the distance wasn’t to hold when the yellows flew once more as Peter Ghent Jnr came to a stop in turn four with a collapsed front end and Kelvin Hamilton forced to stall behind him to avoid major impact.

Wiese used the restart as his chance to reclaim second, shooting low under Smee but ran wide down the back straight allowing Mcallan to snatch third with only four laps remaining. Brown continued his streak towards the chequered flag with Smee gaining precious ground on the front position but unable to steal the prizes spot from Brown's grasp.

Mark Brown crossed the line claiming his second SSS feature this season followed by Nathan Smee, Dene Mcallan, Ben Wiese, Troy Jenkins, Harley Bishop, Matt Young, Grant Draney and Kelvin Hamilton.

Round five sees Mark Brown slip into the lead of the SSS Championship on 3,929 points, followed by Neville Lance on 3,600, Dene Mcallan 3,531 and Troy Jenkins rounding out the top four on 2,763. TPCR round six has become a surefire decider!

The Speedcars continue at Charlton Raceway Toowoomba for the 66th running of the Australian Speedcar Championship this weekend where Australia’s best take on current title holder Davey Ray and 2nd placed Jerry Coons Jnr both of the USA; before charging into Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway on February 17th for the final round of the SSS and the Rondalee 35 Lap $3000 Main Event!
